Don't you consider that your car or truck is a major investment. I do. And if you are like me, you count on it and as a result it is of much value. When something goes wrong with your caryou will want somebody to work on it who knows what he or she is doing.Well, in that respect, a fine wristwatch is the same and watch repair is a serious matter.
In fact, in some cases a wristwatchis a much more sound investment than a automobile! It will certainly keep it's value better and willbe sold some years later for a profitable amount. BUT, that's only if the timepiece is still in supreme condition or even "like new". Thus, the typical care for a fine watchand it'soccasionalwatch repair needs, are most important.
So... what do you do? Where do you take your watch? Who can be trusted with the care and repair of it? Do you ship it off to the factory? Or maybe some local repair shop you heard about?
In a lot of cases it would seem to make sense to send it back to the manufacturer even after the manufacturers warranty has expired. You can rest easy in the knowledge that they'll have in stock all of the proper watch repair parts needed and if anything goes horribly wrong, you could get a new replacement watch (unlikely). But the draw backs to shipping your watch in to the manufacturer are that the service can be impersonal and timely. Manufacturers are not known for their concern with timeliness or customer service. In point of fact, manufacturers can be incredibly good to work with... however, the net isliterally littered with complaints aboutmanufacturersmistreatment of customers. You really should to do the research yourself before deciding.
Here's my recommendation. Find an upscale jewelry store that has a full time in house watch maker or certified watch repairman ( find one in your area if possible, if not just be sure to insure your watch in shipment ). There are just two reasons I will recite here that you should use a retail watch repair service like I just did:
- You will experience customer care in spades because returning business is the basis of their business model.
- You will experience service with a sense of urgency... so when you tell them, "I need my favorite watch back by Wednesday for an event I'm hosting", the shop will bend over backwards to make sure you get that watch back on time!
So, in my experience, giving my business to a reputable repair shop that I reviewed online was more time and cost efficient and the only trick was picking the RIGHT shop.
